Williams Related Families - Direct Line

We continue to make progress in our paternal grandfather's family tree. Contacts with distant cousins, often through Ancestry, and Facebook are helping to add to our knowledge. Although the family has English origins, my grandfather Robert Elliott Williams was born in Paisley, Scotland. His father Andrew and his grandfather Robert were both metalworkers who learned their trade at the Crewe Railway Works in Chesire. Robert was born at Stoke, Nantwich, Chesire according to the 1851 census. He married Martha Badrock of Bunbury, Cheshire in June of 1851 and must have moved to Crewe to work on the railway shortly after, as their first child was born there. Andrew James Williams was born at Crewe and was still there as late as 1881. The census of that year had him as a labourer in the Engine Works at age 22.

The Badrock family was located in Bunbury, Cheshire in 1841. We were able to track g.g.grandmother Martha's parents in each subsequent census up to 1881. The surname varies between Badrick, Badrock, and Badcock in different reports. Notes from my research have been added below along with census and vital statistics data files on similarly named families in Cheshire.

My grandfather's mother, Jane, was an Elliot. Elliot has been very popular as a middle name in our family but seemed to find an extra "t" for some reason. My research has traced our Elliots back to Ireland from Paisley. My guess is that they made the move because of the Irish potato famine which was at it's worst in 1849-50. There were other Irish Elliots that made the move at the same time so I suspect that they all may be related. One of the families came from Enniskillen in County Fermanagh where there were many Elliot families.

I have attached the story of my Elliot research in a pdf file. I have no knowledge of any other branches of the Elliot family but our own. Also published below are various spreadsheets that were created to help my research in the Paisley area. If anyone can further identify any of the families that I have listed I would be glad to add that information. Hopefully we can all find a few more cousins.

Jane Elliot's mother was Catherine Heaslet. Her daughter Catherine also married a Heaslet. The Heaslet name is spelled a multitude of ways from one record to the next but it would appear that we have a fairly good idea of the family tree. Data is arranged below in a similar fashion to that of the Elliot data. It was significantly more difficult to extract data from census and church records due to the variety of ways that the name was spelled. There is a lot more work to do in this regard so all input would be most welcome.

One of the great aunts, Margaret Eliot Williams, married a Butler. Joseph and Margaret Butler's first child was born above the Williams grocery store at 26 Humber Street Belfast. For years there was a high concentration of Butlers and related familes on this street and in this area. There are lots of Butlers in Belfast.

Note: The census and church data files on this page are available to interested parties as Excel spreadsheets. I have included Badcock and Badrick spellings as well. The church (IGI) records align best in the 1860's so I have been able to identify many of the families in that period but I have not completed my study of all of the families nor added notes on the later reports. Additions to my identification notes are welcome.

Butler Family History

The Family of James Butler and Mary Brown

Humber Street Relations
The Butler family were English and it would seem that they were drawn to a booming Belfast a few years before the Williams family. James Butler had a family of 13 with Mary Brown. They lived in East Belfast mainly on Avon and Humber Streets. Their son Joseph married Elizabeth Elliott Williams in 1917. The concentration of related familes on Humber Street is remarkable.
